I Am Interstate is our company-wide recognition program where associates can show appreciation for each other for a specific act, event or behavior that represents our core values. This program is unique because it allows all associates to recognize each other, not just for management to thank their team members.
Acts of recognition are a daily part of the culture in our hotels and corporate offices. Hotels recognize the people that live our core values on a monthly and quarterly basis. Once a year an associate from each division of the company is nominated for the “I am Interstate” annual award – the highest honor an Interstate associate can receive.

I Am Interstate – Full Service Hotel Associate
2014 Winner – Ernesto, The Westin Tampa Harbour Island, Lead Banquet Houseperson
“Ernesto has been a dedicated associate since the hotel opened more than thirty years ago. As a Lead Banquet Houseperson, he understands how to connect with his co-workers and makes sure everyone feels part of the team. He regularly helps associates improve their English reading and writing skills, and provides rides to associates to help them get to work. He is a role model in the department and regularly goes above and beyond his normal job responsibilities to delight our guests. These additional duties have included helping to set up printers, pitching in to move office space, touching up paint in a function room – basically anything and everything to take care of the guest. He lives our value of Service.”
I Am Interstate – Corporate Associate
2014 Winner – Yonas, Interstate Corporate Office-Arlington, Assistant Accounting Manager
“Yonas is the ‘unsung hero’ of the Accounting department; always taking on tasks before being asked, and going the extra mile to provide ‘value add’ service. In 2014 Yonas truly went above and beyond. He was instrumental in deploying a new account management tool that greatly benefits our hotel owners. And when his department manager was pulled into a special project, Yonas stepped up to the plate and took over daily supervision of the team, became a caring coach to new associates, coordinated closely with other managers, and did a wonderful job managing our external customer relationships. His belief in teamwork and positive spirit is outstanding and is consistently demonstrated in everything he does. He lives our value of Excellence.”
I Am Interstate – Crossroads (Select Service) Hotel Associate
2014 Winner – Phoebe, Hampton Inn Medford, Laundry Attendant
“Phoebe is an amazing Laundry Attendant and a shining example of what teamwork is all about. She regularly comes in on her scheduled days off or if someone has called in sick. She helps her housekeeping team by cleaning stay-overs in between loads of laundry, and she is always thinking of new ways to make her colleague’s lives easier. True to her genuine and helpful nature, she assisted the housekeeping team to decrease their cleaning time-per-room by setting up a special linen closet that eliminated the need for them to travel additional floors to re-supply linen. She lives our value of Teamwork.”
